http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12499/7356441?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Fri, 11 May 2018 16:02:19 +0000 Cleaning Up After Tanker Spill WAAY 31's Sarah Singleterry reports on the clean up process of a site where a fuel spill occurred when a tanker truck overturned http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12499/7356441?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WAAY ABC Huntsville, AL happening today ... decatur utilities is marking off the location of underground pipes and wiring in the ditch where an overturned tanker spilled fuel ... the spill happened last night ... at the intersection of indian hills and upper river road ... it shut down two businesses ... blocked traffic ... and forced residents to evacuate ... until the scene was cleared around 10:30 ... waay 31 was at the spill site last night ... and waay 31's sarah singleterry was back out there this morning. she walks us through what's happening now and where the city's at in the clean up process ... here at the spill site where it smells absolutely awful ... the smell of fuel is still so strong out here ... but i wanted to give you guys a look at just how much of this area has been covered up because of last nights spill ... you can see the black tarp covering starts right here behind me and it runs up this small ditch just off the side of the road and even further in front of me ... and this is pretty much how this area is going to stay until environmental crews get the green light from decatur utilities to start digging up this contaminatedsoil and assessing just how much damage was done after last nights spill ... officials say the tanker's driver missed his turn while traveling down highway 67 ... he drove down a narrow two lane street to try to turn around ... but he didn't make it ... the truck flipped ... and the driver made it out of the truck safely ... but the wreck did make a big mess ... waay 31 talked to one of the men tasked with turning the tanker right side up ... who told us making the flip can be risky ... david hicks / river city towing & recovery: > can be very dangerous. if something goes wrong there could be bad results but we're pretty good the tanker was standing up by 930 and removed about an hour later ... officials say it could take up to a week to remove all of the contaminated soil and get this mess totally cleaned up ... in decatur ss waay 31 news> decatur utilities released a statement this morning saying "utility service to customers was not impacted by the fuel spill that occurred on thursday, may 10th. we are working with the appropriate authorities to monitor any soil remediation that may need to occur in the future to ensure the integrity of decatur utilities's underground
