http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12499/7411504?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Tue, 11 Sep 2018 21:59:35 +0000 Wis DOT holds forum for La Crosse infrastructure funding La Crosse County representatives say more funding is needed to make road repairs despite a top state officials saying otherwise. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12499/7411504?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WKBT a look at the 8 things you need to know today... la crosse county representatives say more funding is needed to make road repairs... despite a top state officials saying otherwise. the secretary for the wisconsin department of transportation stopped in la crosse today to talk about infrastructure funding. news 8's mal meyer joins us now to explain why some were frustrated about this official's answers. one of the main projects that was talked about during the meeting at the chamber of commerce is the need to repair la crosse street. some expressed frustration that the project needs to be completed earlier than it's slated for in the year 2025. nat sot: "these streets really can't wait." during the meeting, the wis dot secretary emphasized that the la crosse street project is in a state plan to be fixed, but so far there's no funding for it. nat sot: "is there a way to expidite some of those repairs?" la crosse officials are trying to find a way to get the la crosse street project a top priority. secretary dave ross also said that if major projects like the milwaukee to illinois border corridor are completed quickly, there could be some savings. ross: "as those projects drop off and we complete them once and for all, funds could be used for other activies across the state." but, ron chamberlain of the la crosse county highway department says he respectfully disagrees. chamberlain: "there are way too many needs and frankly, not enough money to go around." especially in la crosse county. chamberlain: "the 2018 capital improvement plan identified 101 million dollars worth of road and bridge needs." that's why the county is putting four questions on the november ballot to show the state legislature how people want the roads to be paid for. johnson: "we've been creative, we've been innovative at finding grants and doing some longer term borrowing- it's not a sustainable approach." the state transportat ion budget will be also released in november, but that doesn't help local leaders already trying to plan for 2019. johnson: "in the mean time, county, towns, cities, villages, school districts, they're all trying to figure out budgets." both johnson and chamberlain said more conversation is needed to better prioritize and fund these projects. the secretary for wis dot said that the issue of la crosse street is very complicated. but he is going to review what repairs can be made in the mean time. did the issue of flooding come up during the meeting? some of the people who attended the meeting asked about how the department would be fixing roads damaged by recent flooding. ross said there will be a mix of emergency and federal funding to fix these in a timely
