How Can I Keep My Websites Safe From Constant Technological Changes?
How to Protect My Websites from Future Technology
By Dennis McKonkie
Some of the best ways to protect my website is to stay in the loop of current innovative technology publications. I would subscribe to Internet magazines, blogs, and other publications that describe future Internet technologies. For instance, Future Internet, published by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, is a free scholarly publication dedicated to providing information on the latest in Disruptive Innovation. Likewise, we can also subscribe to email lists from other future Internet content providers. As a result, we can use future Internet content to know what is coming down the Internet technology pipeline.
Current and Future Website Protection
The days of password protection as the only means of protecting websites are gone forever. Today in the 2020’s and beyond we need firewalls, Internet security suites, antivirus, malware, VPN and adware protection software to protect our websites. So, cyber security innovative technology is another way of how I would future proof my website from today’s and future threats.
Future cyber security buzzwords are bit chain, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud security technologies as a means to protect my websites from future Internet attacks. My website currently does not deploy any of these future technologies directly, but I am definitely interested applying them for future website protection.
Employing Sophisticated Encryption Trends to Future Proof Websites
Specifically, homomorphic encryption protects my website by not have to need a decryption key to decrypt the data. Instead, you read the encrypted data without decryption. Another encryption trend is to encrypt hard drives to prevent access after a laptop has been lost or stolen. You would need a key to decrypt the hard drive.
Additionally, instead of keeping personal information on our computers, we would store our data on hardware wallet devices similar to the hardware wallets used for cryptocurrencies. This future trend would protect our websites since no important personal data will be available online. Similarly, blockchain technology can be added to cybersecurity to increase Internet security.
In contrast, we could use the proven method of quantum cryptography which uses photons of light to transmit files, passwords, or secret key between two parties. Even though the file can be intercepted by another party the files cannot be cloned or copied. Finally, Tokenization is another cybersecurity trend where data is substituted for the intended data to fool hackers into obtaining the fake data or token instead of actual data.
How Does https Increase Website Security?
Another simple way to protect our website from future technology is to use https instead of http for Internet surfing. Once https was an option, but today it is now a requirement for many websites as a means to increase the security of websites. What https does is to encrypt data transfer preventing packet sniffing hackers form reading the information the user is sending as the user accesses a particular website. Unfortunately, with regular http, any hacker with the know how can spy on you or any other end user. All we have to do is enable https at the our websites to protect us from Internet snooping.
If we host our own websites we should enable https or have it enabled. We can use these five steps to enable https on our own hosted websites:
- Host with a dedicated IP address
- Buy a certificate
- Activate the certificate
- Install the certificate
- Update your site to use HTTPS
Https is another way to increase security and protect my website for innovative technologies.
As the Internet and computer data continues to evolve so does the treats that assail digital information. As research continues future website threats may become a problem of the past as new innovative ways are developed to protect users from malicious attacks.
