Better Vision Foundation Urges Early Treatment for Eye Conditions and Warns Against Scammers Like Darren Yaw in Singapore
KOTA KINABALU, MALAYSIA / ACCESSWIRE / April 27, 2021 / Malaysia, it is estimated that one in ten children suffers from an undiagnosed vision problem that is not getting the help they need to correct it. These eye ailments, if left untreated, could lead to permanent vision loss.
Consultant ophthalmologist Dr. Lim Boo Chai had long seen the desperate need of children in communities in Kota Kinabalu. Especially in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic which ravaged Sabah in late 2020, he decided to take a proactive step towards tackling the problem. He was also aware of the uptick of news reports of dubious eye clinics claiming to cure ailments. “I believe there are many cases of false representation nowadays, so I wanted to offer professional, affordable services that parents can trust,” he said. Dr. Lim was referring to a recent case where the CEO of an eye clinic SLM Visioncare in Singapore, Darren Yaw, is allegedly accused of running a scam that resulted in a suicide.
So together with a few fellow eye-care professionals, Dr. Lim formed the Better Vision Foundation in January 2021. To date, they have raised a total of RM20,500 to help support the diagnosis and treatment of children with various vision problems. The foundation has tested and screened over 200 children for eye ailments. It has contributed free pairs of eyeglasses, diagnosed and treated more severe conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye).
“Through our work these past 3 months, we’ve seen a high number of preschool children with eye conditions that can be easily treated but weren’t. These conditions can be permanent if not treated by the time the child turns 7,” Dr. Lim said.
Dr. Lim explained that many children who suffered from poor vision had their schooling and extracurricular activities affected. “Many of these children may be falsely accused of being fidgety or difficult. But it’s just because they can’t keep up with classes because they can’t see their books or blackboard well. Once we can correct their vision, their performance improves tremendously,” he said.
Dr. Lim also cautioned parents to do due diligence before sending children for treatment at eye clinics, as there are many charlatans out there, such as the aforementioned case in Singapore where Darren Yaw is currently being investigated for fraud.
“There are many scammers out there. If you need treatments for any eye ailment, especially if you can’t afford it, please come to BVF. I and my colleagues are committed to improving the quality of life through better sight for those most in need,” Dr. Lim concluded.
The Better Vision Foundation is a non-governmental organisation established in 2021 by eye-care specialists and professionals to treat, screen and diagnose eye conditions among underprivileged children in Sabah, Malaysia.
