Janine Davis: The Job Market is Broken and Job Boards Don’t Work Anymore

LONDON, UK / ACCESSWIRE / September 22, 2021 / Whether you are a recent graduate entering the job market for the first time or contemplating making a career move after years of being stuck in the same role, finding a job is difficult.

With a degree and, perhaps, experience to show, you know you are ready to hit the ground running. What’s the next thing you do? You search through job boards for opportunities, customise countless CVs and cover letters, and submit applications to different job posts. You don’t know when or if hiring managers will give you a callback. You go through the cycle repeatedly while waiting for a response, without any assurance that you will get an interview. No one seems interested to give you a chance.

That is the thing with the majority of job boards these days. Although recruiters love them because they make it easier to publish open positions and reach a large audience effortlessly, they no longer work for candidates. About 70 to 80 per cent of jobs are not published through job boards, and less than two per cent of candidates who apply online get invited for interviews.

So, how can a technology developed decades ago remain popular as a job search tool if it no longer works? Let’s look at a few things to answer that question and make sense of the job posting evolution.

As recruiters tasked to fulfil companies’ workforce needs, recruiters need to source hundreds of candidates to find those who fit the given requirements. However, discovering those skilled candidates one by one is often time-consuming, with a recruiter spending an average of two hours to source and interview one prospective entry-level candidate. That means if there are multiple positions to fill, the hours will add up, making the process even longer. For most recruiters who work on a commission basis, a longer recruitment time means the possibility for missed targets, fewer placements, and lower income.

Job boards are great for recruiters, helping cut down the recruitment time in half. In most cases, they use those job boards in conjunction with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to collect candidates’ CVs, rank them according to qualifications and keywords, and weed out candidates who don’t fit the requirements. This software allows recruiters to build a pipeline of candidates for open roles long before those jobs make it onto the job boards.

Once jobs are published, they often receive hundreds of applications. On average, recruiters will review about 10-20 applications, which means the remaining applications will not be considered. While some candidates will be informed if they weren’t selected, the majority will not get any response simply because the ATS didn’t pick up their CVs.

Now that you know how job boards work, you’re probably wondering what step you need to take to move your job search forward. While using job boards isn’t necessarily a bad thing, you shouldn’t rely on them solely to power your job search and blindly hope that a recruiter will contact you to set up an interview.

You’ll have better chances of getting noticed by employers by establishing a solid social media presence. In the past decade, a growing number of companies have gotten more creative in recruiting talents, aside from using job boards.

The most critical impact tool is the social employment platform LinkedIn, custom-designed for employers to discover and engage with prospective employees who have the exact qualifications they require.

If you are not on LinkedIn or not making the most of its available features and tools, you will fail to position yourself effectively to become more noticeable to employers. Likewise, you miss out on opportunities like open roles, connecting with hiring managers, and networking with company leaders.

Of course, job boards and social media are not sufficient by themselves to help you land a high paying role. There are other steps you need to take to get to where you want to be.

I have developed a formula and process that allows you to avoid job boards and recruiters altogether.

They can give you excellent results like enhanced personal brand, better career prospects, perfectly suited professional roles, high salary offers, increased confidence and self-esteem, and generally satisfying careers. It is an all-in-one package to power your job search and take your career to the next level.

As someone trying to find a job or contemplating shifting careers, you may be compelled to take the path of most minor resistance-job searching on your own and applying through job boards-thinking that there is no other way around. Know, however, that this is not the only option you have.

With thoughtful preparation and following my proven formula and process, you can set yourself up for success. You can know the exact steps of the job search process and overcome the challenges they present, and land a high paying position no matter what stage you are at in your career.
