Lindsay Hofford: What Hockey Taught Me About Business

Lindsay Hofford has spent more than 30 years in the world of professional hockey. His career has put him on the ice, working with players and coaching teams, but it’s also put him in the boardroom.

Hofford is the Founder & CEO of Pro Hockey Development Group, an organization specializing in hockey development for players of all ages, and the founder of NASHA Sports Insurance Company. He is also involved in several startups.

NOBLETON, ON / ACCESSWIRE / December 17, 2021 / This unique juxtaposition has given Hofford a unique perspective and approach to how he does business – and taught him some important lessons.

You have to start with a game plan.

Lindsay Hofford explains that this means you don’t get on the ice – or walk into a boardroom without a bit of preparation and strategy. In hockey, that means practicing, reviewing game tapes, and studying the competition. In business, that means looking at your competition, yes, but also deciphering your brand distinctives, creating a marketing approach, and training your employees.

You have to focus on the fundamentals.

In hockey, that means it always comes back to skating. You have to continue to practice your skating, your ability on the skates, and your ability to move quickly on the skates. In business, that means being the best at your core business – the service or product you offer. If you don’t focus on those fundamentals, Lindsay Hofford says that nothing else you do will matter or be successful.

You have to trust your teammates.

On the ice, you’re not out there alone. You have teammates you have to rely on, who you have to assist, and who you need to make part of the game plan. You can’t go it alone. Business is often the same way. You need your team to help with strategy, to be there for execution, and to help keep you going when times are tough. It takes the whole team to succeed.

You have to play the entire game.

In hockey, you have to play full out for all three periods. You have to play hard and be committed the entire time. In business, you have to stay focused at all times as well. Without that commitment to the entire game, you will falter, and eventually, you will lose.

Hockey and business may seem like completely different activities. But, the two are more closely related than one might think. Lindsay Hofford expresses that what you can learn from one can help you in the other.
