A New Children’s Picture Book That Encourages Passion and Challenges the Perception of Veterinary Medicine

SAN FRANCISCO, CA / ACCESSWIRE / October 2, 2021 / Dr. Cherice Roth, veterinarian and children’s author, has announced the release of her debut picture book, What’s a Real Doctor? While dispelling rumors about what makes a doctor, this charming story highlights the fact that women of color and other marginalized people can follow their hearts and dreams all the way through the completion of veterinary school.

What’s a Real Doctor? challenges the belief that veterinarians and human doctors are inherently separate. Tristan, Cooper, and Clara have a thoughtful discussion about each career path from a child’s perspective. Together, they learn about what veterinarians actually do and how they’re real doctors with extensive training in multiple species.

Dr. Roth’s work is perfect for young children under the age of 6 who have an interest in animals or enjoy learning about new things. What’s a Real Doctor? is an excellent way to introduce children to the importance of schooling and finding their passions as they enter an elementary environment for the first time.

During these formative years, books like What’s a Real Doctor? encourage readers to think critically about the future and the role of STEM in society. Roth’s charming story also includes a diverse cast and representation that reflects her own lived experience.

In veterinary medicine, only 2 percent of these highly trained doctors are Black. Dr. Roth’s story not only challenges the assumption that veterinarians are not “real” doctors, but she also serves as a real-life example of a person of color breaking barriers in her field. She hopes that What’s a Real Doctor? will show young readers, especially children of color, that opportunities await.

What’s a Real Doctor? can be bought from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The book is available in print and e-book formats. Signed copies of What’s a Real Doctor? are also available on Dr. Roth’s website, https://the-real-doctor-store.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/whats-a-real-doctor-with-authors-signature.
