Molina Healthcare and Partners Share Results of Obstetrics Health Care Model Incorporating Artificial Intelligence

LONG BEACH, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Molina Healthcare, Inc. (“Molina”) recently shared some notable results of a groundbreaking health care model that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to impact the full cycle of obstetrical care, from early pregnancy detection to post-NICU community-based care management.

The result of a partnership between Molina, Lucina Analytics, and Progeny Health, the new model demonstrated results in nearly 150,000 patients over an 18-month period, including an 8% decrease in preterm births compared to national trends, an 8% reduction in NICU admissions, and a 9% reduction in total days in the NICU. In addition, the model has led to a 60% decrease in racial disparities in preterm births for Black mothers.

AI, powered by Lucina Analytics, allows caregivers to spot previously undetectable pregnancies and implement a first-trimester visit at a rate of up to 80%. “The power of this tool has allowed us to ensure appropriate delivery of prenatal care and improve birth outcomes, especially in minority populations,” said Dr. Jason Dees, EVP and chief medical officer, Molina Healthcare, Inc.

When a newborn requires NICU care, it is imperative that the infant and the family are supported during this stressful journey. “The importance of early care management with engagement of both the NICU team and family is significant,” said Dr. Linda Genen, chief medical officer at Progeny Health. “That’s why we follow the babies closely and partner with their high-risk OB/GYN care manager when needed, if they were engaged pre-delivery.”

Use of AI does not stop at delivery in this unique model; it continues to provide benefits for up to 365 days post-delivery. “We are supporting moms in the critical months after birth, helping address the heartbreaking trends in maternal morbidity and mortality,” shared Dr. Matt Eakins, president of Lucina Analytics. “We assist with birth spacing, screen for postpartum depression, and catch conditions before they are out of control.”

“Molina is proud of our partnership with Lucina and Progeny and thrilled with the outcomes we have seen with regard to improvements in maternal and child health,” continued Dr. Dees.
