Tiffany Ongtenco Talks to IdeaMensch In New Exclusive Interview

General Manager of Northfleet Concrete Floors, Inc., Tiffany Ongtenco, discusses how she’s found fulfillment in her career and what motivates her to be productive.

Initially hired as an estimator, Tiffany advanced quickly in her role, becoming the general manager (GM) of Northfleet Concrete Floors in just five short years, a testament to her hard work and commitment to excellence. As a GM, she is responsible for managing staff and overseeing the daily operations of the firm.

When asked how she brings ideas to life, she responds: “If it [an idea] seems feasible, I try to talk to everyone, my operations team, the accounting team, the guys in the field, to get their thoughts. I want to know how they think it would work, what benefits it would bring to them, and how we might improve on the idea.”

Understanding the importance of employee buy-in, Tiffany Ongtenco relies on employee feedback before implementing any company improvements. As a leader, she believes a motivated team can make or break the business, which is why she focuses so heavily on employee satisfaction.

In her interview, Tiffany Ongtenco also chooses to set the record straight by shutting down common assumptions about her industry: “Most people assume that creating concrete floors is very labour intensive and not technical, when in fact there is a lot of technique behind what we do… when you are actually out in the field and seeing how it is done, you see the amount of work and care that goes into it, there is more technique and expertise to it than people think.”

In the future, she believes more people will be interested in her line of work. While the job may not be “glamorous,” as Tiffany Ongtenco puts it, there will always be a need for concrete flooring.

Tiffany Ongtenco and her colleagues spend a lot of time and effort on recruitment to ensure they hire self-motivated individuals who will embrace their tight-knit culture. While younger individuals are starting to show a renewed interest in construction, she hopes this trend continues to grow.

Tiffany Ongtenco attended the University of Toronto, where she earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering. After graduation, she began working as an estimator with Northfleet Concrete Floors. Not before long, Tiffany’s superiors started to notice her strong attention to detail and ability to lead.
