The recent winner for the school year 2020-2021 is Jesse Delgado, taking up Masters of Accounting at the University of Houston. The scholarship essay question touched on the topic of what employers should do to give recognition to remote workers: “How do you think employers should recognize remote working employees in the “new normal” era?”

Jesse succinctly answered the question by getting at the heart of the matter–true understanding, acceptance of change, and empathizing with employees are ways that leaders can recognize members of their remote team.

“I graduated just in time for the new era of work. My first full time job has me currently working from home; this drastic change in the work environment has opened my mind to think about work differently and how employers should go about recognizing employees in this new era,” the winning student relayed his current experiences.

“People are discovering that there is more flexibility with remote work and employers must be open minded and flexible. As time goes on employees will adjust to working from home. People are now able to work at times where they are more productive and not succumb to the routine of a nine-to-five job.”

“Employers need to be willing to accept this change. If employees are turning in quality work on time and communication is not a problem, they should be allowed to continue to work in this manner,” Jesse added.

Jesse also continued that the work and business environments are ever-changing, and one of the best ways to recognize employees is through a deep understanding of sustainable methods of working.

“Employers need to recognize that remote work is feasible, employees can adjust to it, and that there are many associated benefits with it. Employers should, therefore, embrace remote work,” the student concluded.

EDCO Awards hopes to continue its legacy of helping students through this annual scholarship program. By providing financial assistance, EDCO Awards desires to bring impact in communities that these students will serve in the present and future.
