All candidates recognized in the previous edition of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America were eligible to vote on other nominated lawyers working in the same practice and located in the same geographic region. Awards and recognitions are then based on the feedback received from these top lawyers. Those who receive the highest peer reviews are verified by our trusted research and development team for accuracy of information and confirmation of private practice. More than 990,000 evaluations were analyzed for the 2022 edition of the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America, which resulted in more than 14,000 lawyers in 79 practice areas recognized.

For research purposes, smaller and more rural cities located within a reasonable distance to larger cities are combined into single geographical regions called “metro areas” to help collect as much feedback and data as possible. As defined by Best Lawyers, America is composed of 201 metro areas.
